Unified Communication in a Complex Healthcare Organization: The Hello Bethesda Story

In healthcare, internal communication has a direct impact on daily operations, predictability and organizational alignment. For Bethesda Children’s Hospital, the challenge was to create a structured and accessible communication platform for a large, diverse and constantly active organization.

Bethesda operates across multiple buildings and two main locations, with nearly 900 employees working in different roles and shifts. Email had been the primary channel, but only part of the workforce followed the central email address, and the amount of incoming information made communication harder to track.

The challenge

·  Reaching employees who do not always work in front of a computer

·  Reducing dependency on email as the primary communication channel

·  Creating more structured and measurable internal communication

·  Supporting onboarding, knowledge transfer and mandatory training

·  Building a stronger sense of community across roles and locations

The Blue Colibri solution

With Blue Colibri, Bethesda launched Hello Bethesda as a mobile-first internal communication platform. The rollout was supported by leadership involvement, an internal ambassador team, community naming and onboarding integration.

The platform quickly became a central place for internal news, leadership communication, onboarding, e-learning, events and community initiatives.

Results at a glance

·  Nearly 900 employees in the organization

·  Two main locations and multiple buildings

·  Around 80% of the organization reachable on the platform

·  721 employees completed mandatory safety and fire protection e-learning

·  400+ employees participated in a digital vote

·  More than 70% of content received likes or comments

Why it matters

Bethesda shows how a healthcare organization can move from fragmented, email-heavy communication to a structured, measurable and community-building platform that supports both operations and employee connection.
